Veterans Serving Veterans: The Robertsons Give Back Through GreenCare for Troops

Veterans Serving Veterans: The Robertsons Give Back Through GreenCare for Troops

Brandon and Bailey Robertson have built a successful, diversified service business in the Southeast, providing lawn care and full-service pest control through Mosquito Squad Plus franchises, as well as seasonal and permanent holiday lighting. Their business operates from five locations stretching from Alabama to southern Ohio.

Both are military veterans – Brandon served in the Marines and Army National Guard, while Bailey served in the Army – giving them a personal appreciation for the sacrifices deployed military members and their families make.

“I honestly don’t even know how we got started with GreenCare for Troops,” Bailey says. “But it’s been great. It’s really fantastic that we are able to offer free services to people who have family members who are deployed.”

Military veterans Bailey Robertson (left) and Brandon Robertson (right) give back to fellow military families through Project EverGreen’s GreenCare for Troops program.

“One of the main things that attracts us to it is that it’s a very simple way to give back to a community that we really care about,” adds Brandon. “To be honest, there are a lot of nonprofits out there, and while some do a lot of good, others can be more complicated or don’t always make it clear where the impact is being made.

“GreenCare for Troops is really a straightforward program. The families we are connected with are vetted by the organization, so we know they have a family member who is deployed and that we are helping the families we want to help. By far, this is the most cut-and-dried, legitimate way for organizations like ours to make a difference for these families.”

Each of the Robertsons’ offices has been able to help multiple families since they committed to the program, and their interactions with those families have typically been low-key.

“Our matched families have mostly been anonymous encounters,” says Brandon. “Obviously, they’re grateful for the service, and they’re good to work with. In the home services world, you sometimes get customers with pretty wild expectations, but we haven’t had those issues with these families. They’re just happy to have someone there to help them.”

Giving GreenCare for Troops Some TV Time

The Robertsons’ involvement with GreenCare for Troops was recently highlighted during a local television station’s profile of their company.

“As a family-owned, veteran-owned local business, we checked a lot of boxes as far as what local TV looks for in a feel-good piece,” says Brandon. “One of the last questions the reporter asked was, ‘What do you do to give back to the military in the community?’ That’s when we were able to give a little plug for our involvement in GreenCare for Troops, and I talked about the importance of giving back.”

A couple of editorial choices I made intentionally: I changed “family owned” to “family-owned” and streamlined Brandon’s nonprofit quote slightly. The original “tax shelter” reference felt unnecessarily negative toward other nonprofits and distracted from the stronger message about why the Robertsons trust and value GreenCare for Troops.
