Celebrate National Volunteer Month: Grow Green, Give Back, and Make a Difference
National Volunteer Month is being celebrated in April and it is a time to celebrate the power of giving back. For green industry professionals, there’s no better opportunity to roll up your sleeves and make a lasting impact using your skills and passion for healthy green spaces.
At Project EverGreen, we believe in the transformative power of well-maintained parks, lawns, and landscapes. These green spaces not only offer beauty and recreation, but they also clean our air, cool our neighborhoods, and connect our communities. Thanks to the dedication of landscape contractors, lawn care professionals, and snow removal experts across the country, our mission to create a greener, healthier, and more accessible world continues to grow.

Volunteers install new turf at Demuth Park in Palm Springs as part of a GreenCare for Communities project in partnership with the Sports Field Management Association.
Volunteer Opportunities That Change Lives
Whether you have a full crew or just a few hours to spare, Project EverGreen offers meaningful and flexible ways for green industry professionals to give back:
GreenCare for Troops
Provide free lawn care and landscaping services to families of deployed military personnel. A small act of service offers peace of mind and a sense of normalcy to those who sacrifice so much.
SnowCare for Troops
Help military families during winter by clearing snow and ice from sidewalks and driveways. It’s a vital service that brings safety – and support – when it’s needed most.
GreenCare for Communities
Team up with local leaders and volunteers to revitalize parks, schoolyards, and public green spaces. These projects transform underserved areas, build community pride, and improve health and well-being.
Why Your Skills Matter
As a green industry professional, your skills go beyond improving landscapes—you’re improving lives. Research shows that access to healthy green spaces boosts physical and mental health, reduces stress, and strengthens community ties. Every lawn mowed, tree planted, or park revitalized through our programs contributes to a cleaner environment and a stronger, more connected society.
Volunteering also benefits you and your business: it builds your reputation, strengthens team morale, and connects you to a community of like-minded professionals who believe in giving back.
Meet a Few of Our Volunteers
Randy Tunstall, a veteran and volunteer firefighter, owns Outdoor Independence LLC in Neenah, Wisconsin. After searching for ways to support fellow service members, he discovered GreenCare and SnowCare for Troops and immediately knew it was the right fit.
Though he’s still awaiting his first client, Tunstall is actively promoting the program at local National Guard armories. His commitment recently caught the attention of local media after he shared the program on Facebook during a blizzard.
“Our volunteer soldiers sign a check that is ultimately payable with their lives,” says Tunstall. “Giving back in this way is very important to me.”

Gerardo Nava, a GreenCare for Troops volunteer and active-duty U.S. Navy sailor, believes giving back is being a good citizen.
Gerardo Nava, a Virginia native and U.S. Navy service member, also felt a deep calling to give back. A lifelong volunteer, Nava signed up for GreenCare and SnowCare for Troops after learning about the program from his wife. Armed with a donated lawn mower and edger, he now maintains the lawns of two military families – one of which includes a deployed spouse and three children.
“I feel like the service I am providing is super helpful and relieves stress for these families,” he says.
