Partnership Pays Off for A Military Family

First Year GreenCare for Troops Volunteer Steps Up for New Jersey Family

“Doing what we do best as part of GreenCare for Troops and seeing the positive impact it’s making firsthand is extra special.”

When Project EverGreen’s GreenCare for Troops formed an alliance earlier this year with I Want to Mow Your Lawn, a volunteer-driven organization providing mowing services to individuals and households in need, the goal was to ensure both programs would be able find and match families to available volunteers more effectively.

The partnership paid off this spring when a referral from I Want to Mow Your Lawn led to a match with first year GreenCare for Troops volunteer, Borst Landscape & Design in Allendale, New Jersey. Borst provides full-service grounds maintenance to commercial and residential clients and specializes in outdoor hardscape design/build in addition to traditional landscape design for residential clients.

For Borst, which has had a deep culture of financial and sponsorship support for local activities in and around its home base of Bergen County since its founding in 1989, signing up for GreenCare for Troops was its first foray into donating services.

“Our President and Founder Mark Borst is always attending events, talking with peers about the landscape business, and picking up new ideas,” says Nicole Marsiglia, marketing director at Borst. “At a green industry conference last fall he came across the Project EverGreen display and brought some information back with him to present at our marketing meeting. We all agreed it was a great idea.”

Although it was on the outer fringe of their service area, it was close enough to a commercial maintenance client that adding the military family onto the route would be relatively easy. The company is also willing to serving more military families within their territory.

“As a local business, we’re always donating to or sponsoring various organizations,” says Borst. “The community has provided us incredible support through the years, so it’s important that we support it back. Doing what we do best as part of GreenCare for Troops and seeing the positive impact it’s making firsthand is extra special.”

“The military member is sacrificing to serve and protect our country,” he adds, “and if our lawn care and maintenance program can make deployment just a little bit easier for their family, we’re more than happy to help.”

Why are Green Spaces Important to Military Families?

Parks, lawns, landscapes and maintained green spaces help to mitigate temperature increases in communities and significantly reduce energy use and cooling costs. Project EverGreen’s initiatives – GreenCare for Troops and GreenCare for Communities – have made a significant impact.

Through its nationwide base of professional volunteers, Project EverGreen has connected people, plants and their communities to maximize the health of grass, plants and trees, which in turn sequesters carbon and cleans the air. Both initiatives support healthy green spaces in neighborhoods and cities, enabling maintained green spaces to function as the lungs of the city and offsetting the negative effects of a warming environment.

A single group or individual cannot transform lawns, landscapes and parks but Project EverGreen’s coalition of businesses and individuals helps maintain green spaces so they can thrive.
