Restoring Play and Community at the Yawkey Club of Roxbury

As part of Project EverGreen’s GreenCare for Communities initiative, volunteers, professional contractors, and community partners are teaming up to revitalize the baseball field at the Yawkey Club of Roxbury outside of Boston. This collaborative effort will transform a well-loved but aging space into a safer, more functional, and environmentally healthier green asset for local families, aspiring athletes, and residents to enjoy.

Beyond the field upgrades, the project underscores the vital role that healthy green spaces play in a community’s well-being. Safe, accessible athletic fields encourage physical activity and teamwork, while lush green turf naturally cools the environment, filters stormwater, and improves local air quality. These benefits extend far beyond the ballfield creating a space where residents can connect, children can play, and community spirit can thrive.

This GreenCare for Communities renovation is made possible through the collective efforts of Project EverGreen, and dedicated partners from ScottsMiracle-Gro, the Sports Field Management Association and the New England Sports Field Management Association. Their expertise, resources, and volunteer commitment exemplify how collaboration across industries can create greener, healthier, and more connected communities. The renewed field at the Yawkey Club of Roxbury will stand as a shining example of teamwork in action—restoring both the land and the spirit of play it supports.

About the Yawkey Club of Roxbury

At the Yawkey Club of Roxbury, young people have found a place where opportunity, connection and confidence come together to shape brighter futures. Since opening its doors in 1910 as the Roxbury Boys Club – and evolving through its 2006 renovation and renaming – the Club has remained a cornerstone of the community, providing a safe and supportive environment for youth and families. Today, members explore their passions through hands-on experiences like music production, workforce development as teen associates and leadership-building programs, all while forming meaningful relationships with peers and mentors who encourage their growth. As part of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston network, the Yawkey Club continues to play a vital role in strengthening the Roxbury neighborhood, creating measurable progress by empowering young people to succeed and fostering a lasting sense of belonging that extends well beyond their time at the Club.

Project EverGreen’s Impact

Parks, lawns, landscapes, and maintained green spaces help mitigate temperature increases in communities and significantly reduce energy use and cooling costs. Since 2008, Project EverGreen’s GreenCare for Communities initiative has renovated community parks and public green spaces totaling more than 200 million square feet of living green space.

Through its nationwide network of professional volunteers, Project EverGreen connects people, plants, and their communities to maximize the health of grass, plants, and trees, sequestering carbon, cleaning the air, and creating healthier, more sustainable environments. Maintained green spaces function as the lungs of the city, offsetting the effects of a warming climate and providing safe, beautiful places for people to gather, play, and grow together.
