Justin Chesser Values the Importance of Giving to Military Families
“One of the reasons I signed up was because there really aren’t a lot of programs specifically designed for families of deployed soldiers. it’s a way to give back to a group of people that are often overlooked.”

On My Own Time Lawn Care
Troy, Missouri
For many years, landscaping was a part of Justin Chesser’s life in rural Troy, Missouri. He bought his first mower at age 13 and started mowing some neighborhood lawns for extra money. Even in his 20s, married with kids and responsibilities, Chesser side-hustled mowing evenings and weekends with a friend, calling the company On My Own Time Lawn Care.
Faced with a need to choose, he purchased another small lawn care operation and dispensed with his full-time job to give landscape care a go.
“I bought out another company so I could take on a full-time employee,” he says. “Fortunately, the business snowballed, and we’ve had great growth.”
He attributes his success to the support of his small rural community and was searching for ways to give back. While attending the Green Industry Expo (now Equip Exposition), he came across the Project EverGreen booth and noticed the promotions for the GreenCare and SnowCare for Troops programs and immediately liked what he saw. “I signed up on the spot.”
Chesser has been able to help one military family so far and is eager to serve more.
“One of the reasons I signed up was because there really aren’t a lot of programs specifically designed for families of deployed soldiers,” says Chesser. “There are many more programs like this for veterans, and while they are deserving of everything we can provide to help them and their families, our families of currently deployed soldiers can also use a helping hand.”
He would encourage every landscape, lawn, and snow removal company to consider signing on.
“It’s super easy to get started, the communication with the program coordinators is outstanding and the process is very streamlined,” Chesser notes. “And again, it’s a way to give back to a group of people that are often overlooked.”
