“Helping these health care heroes has made an impact on my life because they are risking their own lives to help others, which is the greatest sacrifice of all.”
Jason Brown
Short Blade Lawn Care
Kenner, Louisiana
When Jason Brown of Short Blade Lawn Care in Kenner, Louisiana, first hearing about Project EverGreen’s GreenCare for Troops program at the GIE+EXPO in 2017, he knew immediately that it was a chance to give back to his community.
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit Brown’s home state hard this spring, he jumped at the chance to expand his volunteer efforts and sign up for the GreenCare for Troops Cares for Our Health Care Heroes initiative. Since registering for the initiative, Brown has been matched with two health care professionals and is servicing their lawns this summer.
Brown lives near multiple military bases and has family members who are veterans, so he knows what sacrifice means. This is what motivated him to volunteer for the GreenCare for Troops program, but he says that helping his local health care heroes is equally rewarding.
“Helping these health care heroes has made an impact on my life because they are risking their own lives to help others, which is the greatest sacrifice of all,” says Brown. “Fortunately, I am in a position owning my own lawn care company to help a few families. It’s the least I can do.”
Brown started Short Blade Lawn Care in 2016 and it has grown steadily, allowing him to help more families in need. And although maintaining yards is important, it goes much further than that.
“The feedback I’ve received from the health care workers is that having a well- maintained lawn adds to their relaxation after a long shift,” says Brown. “When they’re done working on the frontlines, they say it is nice to come home and sit outside and enjoy nature for a few minutes.”
In a time where so many people are sacrificing to help others, stepping up and helping them with small everyday tasks like lawn care, has a major impact in their lives. Whether it’s helping a military family or a health care worker, an act of volunteerism can make the biggest difference. Just ask Jason Brown.
