The environmental sustainability movement has necessitated many new and innovative Grounds Management strategies. To responsively and effectively serve its membership, the Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) has acknowledged the great significance of this movement and the associated challenges it presents. To further its long standing goal of assisting the Grounds Manager in developing techniques and management skills to assure excellent grounds management programs for their organizations, clients or employers, the PGMS has integrated a number of sustainability initiatives throughout its membership offerings and organizational structure.
PGMS STRATEGIC PLAN
Long-term Goal: PGMS will be recognized by the green industry, customers and stakeholders as the authority and the “go to” resource on sustainability issues and grounds management.
Strategic Objective: Integrate sustainability into PGMS’ identity, and gain national recognition for expertise in this area.
CERTIFIED GROUNDS MANAGER AND GROUNDS TECHNICIAN PROGRAM
Obtaining the CGM™ and CGT professional designations require completing a comprehensive examination process that evaluates environmental sustainability knowledge and the applications of “best practices” within the Grounds management profession.
GREEN STAR AWARDS PROGRAM
PGMS’ annual Professional Grounds Management Awards Program brings national recognition to grounds maintained with a high degree of excellence. The analytical judging process includes an assessment on how well the entrant’s submittal presents “demonstrated sustainable practices and methods” within the maintenance operation.
SCHOOL OF GROUNDS MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
Certificate of Completion requires 24 educational credits within 4 years with 18 of these credits coming from core competency divisions. These divisions are Human Resource Management, Business and Financial Management, Technical Management – Horticulture and Technical Management – Non – Horticulture. Sustainability topics are structured within each division.
SEMINAR AND SITE VISITS
The PGMS Seminar Site Visit series is designed to provide Grounds Managers with the opportunity to gain knowledge about and see first-hand sustainability projects and “best practices” at premier grounds facilities across the country.
SUSTAINABLE GROUNDS MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATION PROGRAM
In keeping with PGMS’ resolve for environmental sustainability, this program will evaluate an applicant’s strategic Grounds Management principles and practices that promote the economic, environmental and social performance within the Grounds functional area. Sustainability approaches will be viewed from a Grounds Management framework that will include the overall appearance of the site and with a high regard for excellent Grounds maintenance standards and “best practices”.
The PGMS annual Gold Medal award is bestowed upon an individual or entity in recognition of their outstanding and long-term achievements and/or contributions to the green industry. The 2011 Gold medal was presented to the Sustainable Sites Initiative™ (SITES™) for this collaborative effort to create a voluntary rating system and performance benchmarks for sustainable land design, construction and maintenance practices.
